Qu Yuan (340-278 BC) was a renowned patriotic poet and statesman in ancient China during the Warring States period (475-221 BC).
As a statesman, he dedicated himself to the prosperity of the Chu state from the late Warring States Period. He advocated political reforms but faced strong opposition from corrupt nobles, which led to his exile.
In his exile, Qu Yuan expressed his deep love for his motherland and concerns about the people through his poems. His works, like Li Sao, are masterpieces of ancient Chinese literature, full of rich imagination, profound emotions and unique cultural connotations.
Ultimately, filled with grief over the decline of the Chu state, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This day is now celebrated as the Dragon Boat Festival in China to remember him.
